Going with Olympics—the 1st Funny Sports Meet of Dalian Mogamiseiki Labor Union

2014-11-13

The 29th Beijing Olympic Games has answered a curtain call perfectly, yet people are still enjoying the aftertaste of the highlights of Olympic Games. Riding on the wind of the Olympic Games, the 1st Funny Sports Meet of Dalian Mogamiseiki Labor Union was held solemnly in the company at 9 a.m. on September 2.

As arranged by the company’s Vice President and Chairman of Labor Union, Mr. Cui Hongwu, after the careful preparation of all union staff, the organization of sports meet went on in good order. According to specific departments, the whole company was divided into Forming Sector 1, Forming Sector 2, Forming Sector 3, Assembly, External Packaging, Metal Molds and General Department composed of Quality and General Affairs. There were a total of seven teams. Accordingly, they were divided into seven squads, in pink, white, red, yellow, green, orange and blue garments respectively. They were arrayed in the grandstand neatly and orderly. Referees and staff were dressed in navy blue, stood by and bustled around the site. The first item of the meet was an entrance ceremony of representatives on behalf of all athlete teams. They dressed neatly, walked in step and their dashing manner was full of vigor, demonstrating the charm of sports. The second item was addresses of the company and Labor Union leaders. After that, beautiful girls from Mogamiseiki performed calisthenics before the meet. The dynamic melody and unrestrained dance soon infected everyone present. The atmosphere was warmed up immediately.

hat were held in the morning were 50-meter dash preliminaries and team events. With a gunshot of the chief referee, the games started formally. This was a funny sports meet. It was not only a competition of physical strength and intelligence, but also a competition of teamwork spirit and cooperative consciousness. Team events included eight items, i.e., cooperative relay race, ball-lifting relay, “couples” returning home, ball-embracing relay, bottle relay, quickness and accuracy and hula-hoop rely. Among them, cooperative relay race required binding a person’s left leg to another person’s right leg, two persons in a pair, three pairs in a team. Whoever reached the finishing line first would win. In large rope skipping, two athletes swung a rope and eight athletes skipped. Whichever team made the most skips in specified time would win. These two events can best test the participants’ collaboration ability. Only when walking in step and cooperating with each other would teams achieve good grades. Throughout the meet, there were many wonderful moments and cheers. As Medal Molds Sector had more male employees than female, all rope skippers were male. This scene was particularly striking. Men were not inferior to women in this event. Finally, they won the prize. On the field, athletes fought in honor of their team. Off the field, various cheering squads cheered for their own sectors. The cheers formed a growing chorus. They were competing, too. They not only cheered up for their athletes on the field, but also wanted to overwhelm the opponent in momentum.

What were held in the afternoon were personal events. There were a total of 5 events, i.e., shot put, weight lifting, 50-meter dash final, 50 meters arithmetic dash and topping-on. The sun was shining fiercely, but everybody’s enthusiasm was even higher than the hot temperature. Shot put and long jump was held simultaneously. The field often broke into applauses. Athletes’ grades were refreshed constantly. Every athlete wanted to win. However, sometimes, games were a transcendence of athletes themselves. An athlete didn’t win the first prize, but he was still in high spirits. I asked him why. He said this was the best result that he had ever got. Isn’t this the best interpretation of the Olympic spirit-- “faster, higher and stronger”? The most intense competition was the 50-meter dash final. Although for games, participation was more important than results, yet every athlete did their best to win championship. In the preliminaries in the morning, a female athlete entered the final, but her knee was injured and the skin was bruised. We all guessed that she wouldn’t attend the final in the afternoon, but we saw her again in the final. When seeing her, I recalled Su Liwen, a Chinese Taipei taekwondo athlete in this Olympic Games. Her leg was injured in the preliminary and was carried out of the course by her coach. But she persevered until the battle for bronze medal and fought to a draw in the third round at 4:4. She tumbled again. The referee asked if she would stop the game, but she insisted on continuing and cheered up for herself. Finally, Su Liwen was defeated by her opponent in OT and fell down on the ground for the 14th time. For the first time, she cried sadly. Her tenacious will at first made us feel sympathetic, and then moved us to tears and finally arouse a reverence from the bottom of our heart. When all strengths and skills reached a certain height, what were competed for were spirit and will. In the final sprint of the 50-meter arithmetic dash, when a leading athlete was about to reach the finishing line, suddenly he tumbled and was unable to win championship. Although they didn’t win, not just champions were heroes. They were heroes in our heart, too. We rewarded these uncrowned kings with even warmer applause. Their moving stories had surpassed the meaning of competition itself.

Competitions continue, cheers continue and Olympic spirits continue, too. When a group of individuals, who pursue self-transcendence constantly form a harmonious unity, what a creative force they will build! Let us go with the Olympics Games, surpass ourselves and work wonders constantly, under the guidance of the Olympic spirit.
